Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall, Constructed 1956-1957

Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall, also known as PBK Hall or Phi Beta Kappa Hall, is located on Jamestown Road between the Martha Barksdale Athletic Fields and the Muscarelle Museum of Art. The building is currently home to the Department of Theatre, Speech, and Dance.

The first production of a theater performance by students at a college or university in America took place at William & Mary in 1736. The building currently hosts numerous events throughout the year including theater productions, concerts, and the Virginia Shakespeare Festival. It is named in honor of the Phi Beta Kappa honor fraternity which was founded by William & Mary students in 1776.

The building was constructed between 1956 and 1957 and opened on March 27, 1957 with the performance of "Romeo and Juliet" by the William & Mary Theatre. The first floor features the auditorium, dressing rooms, offices, and the Phi Beta Kappa room. WCWM, the university’s radio station, operated from Phi Beta Kappa Hall from 1959 until 1985, when it moved to the Campus Center basement studio.
